In 2002, Mr. Stewart, a Scottish journalist walks from Herat to Kabul. He was told the trip was not possible in the dead of winter. The book relates his experiences; high points and low; grudging hospitality and great generosity; cold and hunger; accidents and fatigue. He was met, at different times, with amazing friendliness; hostility; and disbelieving curiosity. He gives fascinating insights into the culture of the Afghans. An excellent read.
